Putting the U in Beauty…

I recently visited New York’s Crowne Plaza with a few other bloggers for an intimate introduction to LAMIK Beauty and its founder, Kim Roxie. As I sat and listened to Kim speak about what’s in a lot of the products in my makeup bag- especially my lip gloss (but not in LAMIK), I got tempted to overhaul most of my collection (until reality set in and I remembered a new makeup wardrobe isn’t in the budget). As a licensed aesthetician, she’s made it a point to learn about the ingredient lists for the products she’s used- and applied that knowledge to excluding harmful chemicals and comedogenic additives (parabens, talc, etc.) from LAMIK.

What interested me most about the presentation, though, was her explanation of the LAMIK way. Rule #1: Beauty is revealed, not applied. Alluding to the natural beauty we each possess, the belief system behind the brand indicates that you should work to accentuate the natural features rather than simply applying a bunch of product. Rule #2: No rubbing- always blot or pat. Whether you’re applying foundation, eye shadow or lipstick, do not rub the product in… simply blot or pat it on so that you can have full control of the amount you’re putting on. She put her words into action, and “revealed” my inner sex pot with an “Ostrich Green” smoky eye. (She even brought my non-existent brows to life using the LAMIK Celebrity Brow Kit.)

Oh… here’s another cool tidbit about LAMIK- If happen to drop and break an eye shadow, you no longer have to throw it away or put it into a mini plastic bag (to keep it from getting on EVERYTHING). Now, you can simply bring it into a store, and they’ll turn it into a loose powder shadow for you (and put it into their patented no-break packaging). Plus, if you have a lipstick or gloss shade that’s being discontinued… or simply want the color without the crummy ingredients, bring or ship it to them, and they’ll re-create it for you (and it’ll only cost you $21).

Between the Sheets: Jones Magazine’s “Your Best Summer” Issue

Er’body Jones! *Capo voice*

Jones Magazine’s recently released summer issue celebrates the hot (haute) season in living color (not just neon nails & bright clothes, but also multicultural models and designers). In addition to making a call for more diversity in the fashion industry, the mag’s editors also scoured various beauty counters to find the best products and consulted with Net-A-Porter’s fashion director, Holli Rogers to find this season’s style requirements. My favorite part, though, is Marquita Harris’ ode to icons of color (was a bit surprised to see Lisa Bonet amongst the ranks of Grace Jones, Diana Ross and Dorothy Dandridge, but…). I never believe any magazine can tell me how to have my “best summer” (or any season). However, I will say that I had a fun few minutes reading it and lusting over the shoes, etc. Now I’m all haute & bothered. Excuse me while I go check my fresh.

I Wish I May, I Wish I Might: Luis Morais Small Locket Om Necklace

On My Om…

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately. I’m a freelancer/ self employed individual, and business has been a little slow. As any creative will tell you, such lulls can lead to all types of sour moods. That’s why it’s imperative to have a few guardian angels in your corner who will wrestle you out of your slump. My most recent relief came in the form of a treat to a week of Bikram Yoga. Last night was my first session; an hour and a half of smelly, strenuous, splendid self exploration. I survived! (Apparently, I did pretty darn good for a newbie, too.) Now that I’m feeling all triumphant, and centered, I think I need a memento to help me find my chi should it wander back into the abyss of financial/ social woes. This Luis Morais Small Locket Om Necklace makes the perfect such trinket, no? Open what looks like a simple little gold box on a chain to reveal an “Om” symbol (that calming, meditative sound that assists many in finding inner peace and harmony). You can even put a tiny picture in there of something else calming… like… shoes. The reason I don’t already have it: the $1,470 price tag. For many, that’s not much. For me, though, well just refer to the beginning of this post. However, I do have a birthday quickly approaching, and I’d be incredibly happy if some benevolent soul saw fit to hit Aloha Rag make this mine.

The Oooh Weee: This Draped Across Dress from Nasty Gal has Me Feenin’

Draped up & Hipped Out…

When you “got an a$$ that can swallow a g-string, and up top, uhn, two bee stings,” it can be a bit tough to find dresses that complement both the undergarment grubber AND the barely there boobies. I’m kinda sorta part of that club, and let me tell you how hard it is to find dresses that are a happy medium between hoochie and humdrum. The fashion gods seem to have heard my laments, so they sent Saint NASTY GAL to the rescue, armed with the Draped Across dress. Though the top is actually more voluminous than the bottom, it hangs in such a way that makes my lack of cleavage chic. The bottom portion is semi fitted, so I’d suggest going a size up to make sure it caresses your lady lumps instead of squeezing them. Oh… and who doesn’t love a dress with pockets??? It’s available in all types of punchy colors, but I’m sure I’ve mentioned numerous times that fuchsia is my favorite. (My birthday is in less than a month… HINT! I’ll take a medium. It’s only $58 dollars… Thanks!)

Hair’s the Deal…

I’ve been having hair woes since November (when a large load of family stress plopped itself onto my back). Somewhere around that time, a sizeable amount of my already-shine resistant, un-relaxed (but color treated) hair decided we needed to part ways. Very quickly I went from a nice sized wild fro to something way too tame for my liking. PLUS it still didn’t wanna shine. (The one in the red chair was taken in June, the other was taken less than a month ago. See the difference in the size of my fro? I’m about to cry looking at the comparison.)

Recently, I lamented the loss of my beloved locks and the lackluster attitude of what remained to a friend and fellow diva. Poof! A box of complimentary samples arrived on my doorstep from Jane Carter Solution.

The package included Moisture Nourishing Shampoo, Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo, Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner, Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner, Wrap & Roll setting lotion, Condition & Sculpt liquid gel, Curl Defining Cream, Nourish and Shine hair butter, Hair Nourishing Cream, Scalp Nourishing Serum and Hair Nourishing Serum.

I liked the results of the Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo, Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner and Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner. After washing, my hair didn’t feel stripped and dry the way it has with some other shampoos. Plus it’s sulphate free, and I love the tingly feeling from the peppermint in it. Conditioning left my hair soft, and I didn’t notice much breakage in my comb (always a good sign, right?).

Then I applied the Curl Defining Cream (because if I don’t use something my hair will look like some kind of shapeless cotton ball). Unfortunately, this product may work TOO well, my coils became a little too tight for my liking (but my hair is ‘funny acting’, so I may have to give it another try).

So far, the Hair Nourishing Serum and Hair Nourishing Cream are keeping my hair moisturized but not greasy (YES, I need BOTH, and the serum smells pretty fresh), and I like the Scalp Nourishing Serum, too (ylang ylang and cedar, anyone?). However, the STAR of this product show is the Nourish and Shine. It’s not sticky or greasy, but it leaves a nice luster.

All in all, I’m pleased with the kit. I’m not sure that I’ll convert totally to the brand but a few of the products will surely be added to my regimen (I think you know which ones). I’m hoping now my hair will be happy enough with me to grow back. I really don’t wanna go back to tracks on tracks on tracks *Roscoe Dash voice*.

The Oooh Weee: This Pat Field Original Pumps Beach Towel Has Me Feenin’

You may not be able to tell from the crazy weather patterns on the east coast, but the calendar says summer’s fast approaching. It’s almost time for partying poolside and lounging on the beach. I haven’t even started the process of bathing suit shopping for the year (Gasp! Cringe! *sucks stomach in*), but I’ve already spotted my first must-have beach towel. EVERYONE knows StyleScrybe is a shoe geek, so imagine the delight I felt when I spied a picture of the Patricia Field Original Pumps Beach Towel in my inbox.

One of my least favorite parts about going to the beach is the fact that I have to be in flats (heels in the sand seldom work out quite right). With this towel, at least I’ll be able to lounge on a few pairs even if I can’t walk in them. The website doesn’t provide exact measurements (maybe Miss Pat should hire StyleScrybe to do product descriptions), but it looks pretty big in the pictures. I’d say it’s worth the $25 (pending a trip to the Pat Field fashion playground to cop a feel for softness).

Have I told you lately that I love shoes? Well, not only do I love them, but I’ve got pretty discerning taste in them, too. Granted, it’s not always about the price or the brand (though there are certain brands I REFUSE to wear, no matter how cute the shoes are). Usually, it’s a shoe’s ability to stand out from the masses. The shoes I love most aren’t only eye catching… they’re the ones few would dare to wear. I’ve been told it makes me a shoe snob of sorts. As such, wearing this “Shoe Snob” tee by Famous Nobody will keep me from having to explain the stank face I give certain shoes. The Oooh Weee: This JuJuLee “Diamond” Pendant Has Me Feenin’

Diamonds on My Neck (Di-diamonds on my neck…)

I’m pretty over the whole “iced out chain” thing, but I can still dig a well-placed bit o’ bling. (Over the word “bling,” too, but it rhymes, so…) This “Diamond” pendant from Jujulee’s Etsy store, with its is iridescent acrylic shards, shines just enough for me. It’s a perfect post-recession (*eye roll* lots of people I know STILL can’t find a job) chic accent when pearls don’t suffice. Oooh… wait… I think I’ll wear mine WITH pearls. Yeah… that’s it. It’s only $9.95, so maybe I’ll get a few and layer them or something. Who knows. Either way, I think this little “Diamond” might be my new best friend (I mean, it’s DEFINITELY conflict free, so there’s no guilt involved).

It’s funny how the UNIVERSE works. I hopped up out the beddddd with a mean mug today- inspired by a recent realization that certain people really have no place in StyleScrybeopolis. Then, I got a call from one of my favorite folks on the planet, who, after telling me my heart is way too big, informed me that I need a “F*ck You” t-shirt for every day of the week. (Apparently I’m to sweet to give folks the boot any other way.) Granted, I’d already started writing a post for my shoe blog (Shoes N Booze) about the Massimo Dogana “F U” shoes Ashanti work to the BCBG Max Azria show (Ohhh… yeah… I’ll talk about NY Fashion Week stuff in another post, but in the meantime, check out the pic of Ashanti in the shoes on Fug Girls). *Light Bulb* (Stay with me… it’s about to all come together) In addition to putting a claim out to the UNIVERSE that I’ll one day own these shoes ($995 for the sandals & $1095 for the booties on Gregorysshoes.com), I’m dubbing today “Eff You” Day. Note To Self: You Are NOT Your Past

It happens to the best of us; those moments when we get so caught up in what we didn’t/ couldn’t do last year, last week… even 5 minutes ago. Then we beat ourselves up to the point of neglecting whatever task is at hand. Sometimes I even let it paralyze me… leading me to have another moment in 5 minutes, a week… a year. At the end of the day, though, those moments (which at times become hours or even days) are only harmful and cycle-forming. And when you’re self employed in a fast-paced industry like mine, they can be costly in more ways than one. (Notice how long ago my last post was?) Retail Therapy: Altruette’s Charitable Charms

There’s a special feeling of happiness one experiences after purchasing an adored item, and it’s magnified by 10 when you know proceeds from that purchase are going to a good cause. (No… I don’t have scientific evidence to back that statement up. I’m just going by my own heart.) It’s therapeutic.

I’m hoping you’ve figured out by now that I fancy myself a writer (and a few other people agree… that’s why they write me checks). You may or may not, however, be privy to my love for notebooks. I almost always have one in my purse (even though I can take notes on my phone), and I have at least 5 in rotation at any given time.

I also dig jewelry, and I’m sentimental, so I swoon over small, meaningful danglies. See where I’m going with the recycled silver Notebook Charm that’s plated in gold and pictured to the left? In Celebration Of: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Sinng, Celebrate! (Sing sing celebrate!)

During the LilScrybe days, I could recite most of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s biography from memory (I also knew most of Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X’s stories, but today is about Dr. King). Even at that early age, I realized the importance of his sacrifices, risks and resistance to violence. I was barely into my big girl britches when his birthday became a holiday, and as such, I was raised during a time when the echo of the Civil Rights movement still rang out through the ‘hood, not just in rap rhetoric or twitter streams, but in the way families instilled values of education, appreciated our right to vote… (etc. etc.).

Now that the POTUS is a man of African Descent, and there are probably more wealthy and upper middle class Black Americans than there have ever been, many of us feel the dream has been realized. (I mean, look at all the Black folks we have on TV and in movies now, right?) However, There are many parts of Dr. King’s dream and of the Civil Rights movement that we’ve let slip. We enjoy the wealth, the comfort, and freedom but we seem to have lost a lot of the togetherness, collective work and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. This weekend, my Facebook and twitter timelines were filled with quotes and of individual reflections of those quotes, and that’s awesome. Still, as we share quotes from Dr. King’s speeches, enjoy a day away from our offices I hope that we can all take a few moments to consider how we can revive our communities, re-energize our youth toward positivity and reshape some of the new and negative images of what it means to be an African American.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve been in the trenches or that I don’t enjoy luxuries. However, now, I’m asking… how can I help? How can we all help? And while you ponder that… remember these?

Rawr! Rawr! Like a…

We’re fabulous, generous, passionate and often creative. We’re also a bit dogmatic, a scoche bossy (I prefer “inclined to lead”) and allegedly interfering. Nonetheless, Leo women are easy to love (ask anyone who knows me). A bunch of news reports, twitter chatter and Facebook updates are reporting that the planets have shifted over the last 3000 years, and many of us don’t really belong to the zodiac signs we thought we did. Well, to the folks who got us all up in a stir… I don’t believe you. You need more people. I’m pretty much the poster child for Leos, and your claims that I’m actually a Cancer won’t change that… because I said so. Anyway, here are a couple of Leoriffic pieces I’m contemplating to celebrate my sign.

Gotta love a necklace that says “If you mess with me, I might bite your head off. “The Lioness Necklace” from Lulus.com does just that, except it’s still cute and dainty in a way. It’s only $17.99, too. See, not EVERYTHING has to be extravagant for a Leo to love it. (Especially if it’s some kind of self-acknowledging accessory.)

Leos are also fans of sparkly-yet-not-obnoxious things (OK most of us like sparkly things in general, but we know how to rock them properly). That must be why I’m such a fan of this Leo Zodiac Cuff by Jessica Kagan Cushman (via Vivre.com for $85)

The moment I saw these dangly “I Ain’t Lion” earrings, I was in love. Lions? Check! Odd detail? Check! Dope with a fro? CHECK! In stock? Nope. Still, I had to share them… maybe they’ll be back at ModCloth soon. (Gotta love a restock notification list. *blink*)

Because the “Debil” Was Busy…

So… I try to stay on Karma’s good side and keep my inner ratchet-ness at bay. However, occasionally, I act up a little. Previously, I’d say “Blame it on the al-al-al-al…” or “When the Remy’s in the system…” However, Thanks to Urban Outfitters I have an even better cop out: Gangsta Rap! Blamed for various social ills from disregard for the law to middle American white teen angst, gangsta rap might be the best scapegoat ever. And now I’m jumping on the bandwagon (granted… I do have my opinions about the effects of entertainment on society, but that’s for a different conversation). So, if you happen to see me cuss someone out, kiss a guy in public or even don a pair of fifty-four-elevens, remember… Gangsta Rap Made Me DO IT. I promise to only say it when I’m wearing the tee shirt, though.

The Oooh Wee: Zara’s Sweater Coat Has Me Feenin

Caught by the Collar

Earlier in the season I wished for a really cute sweater with a big furry collar (don’t worry, it’s faux. I don’t want no prah-lems prah-lems with PETA… at least not over a sweater). I saw a few in various stores, but they didn’t have the cozy-but-fly look I had in mind. I must have wished upon the right star, because thanks to Slice of Style, I just realized that Zara has the EXACT sweater I want. (Wondering where that particular wish-granting star was last night when the Mega Millions drawing occurred.) The double breast and shawl collar give it that fresh from granny’s closet look I’m loving at the moment. Plus it’s only $60. I wish Zara would hurry up and get their e-commerce game tight so I could just order it online. I can’t wait to get it (and I’m praying I’ll be able to find it in stores… especially now that I’m sharing it before buying it). I’ve already got various looks floating in my head. Think leggings, boots and a belt or slim jeans and casual shoes, or… you know what… just wait and see.

What We Talkin’ Bout: A 2010 Recap Mashup

What Had Happened Was…

It happens at the end of every year. Loads and loads of “looking back” lists. Well, 2010 was full of fodder. This has been SOME year! From BP’s oil spill, to Snooki, to Lady Gaga’s meat dress, To Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” and Justin Beiber’s… hair. (I’m hoping I’ll get to the personal reasons at some point before the ball drops, but today’s about the things that affected everyone… or at least other people than myself.) Since I’m big on self indulgence and short on time… I’ll just share a few rundowns of things that mattered to me (see, there goes that self absorption). My personal favorite is Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Carolers singing “12 Things That Happened In 2010”

ELLE’s list was in slide show format had a more fashionable slant (of course). Daphne Guinness (pictured below, photo via Elle.com) made the list by buying Isabella Blow’s wardrobe (I’m actually kinda jealous in a way). My biggest issues with the list:

1. I SWEAR there had to be something more important in fashion this year than Dakota Fanning being named Homecoming Queen of Hollywood High for the second year in a row. (I really don’t understand why it made the list… because she wears designer clothes? What rich kid doesn’t?)

2. How can you mention Fashion Week’s relocation to Lincoln Center without at least a head-nod in the direction of of the ‘Fashion in Action’ silent protest staged by a group of Black women in response to Essence Magazine’s hiring of a white fashion director instead of selecting from a large number of qualified Black ones. (Oh… that’s right, we’re still marginal. I’m sure someone somewhere is saying ‘take that, affirmative action!’)

New York Magazine’s “The Cut Blog” did a mélange entitled “The Best of the Best and Worst Dressed Lists.” It included those who made lists in Vogue (Both the US and UK versions), The Guardian and other fashion go-tos. (No real issues with that one… my lazy side likes that it cut down on my research.) Little Miss “Whip My Hair” made the The Guardian’s list (love her like an imaginary kid sister).

The homies at Parlour Magazine did a diss list, comprised of this year’s most gag- or yawn-worthy Hip Hop videos. I must agree with the selections (though I don’t watch many videos, so I don’t have much of a comparison base.) Who’s surprised that a Nicki Minaj video topped the list, though? #noshade

Note to Self: Be Brave

This one is for all the entrepreneurs out there. It takes lots of courage to step out on your own. I don’t know how many times people have said I should get a “regular” job so that my income will be consistent (who doesn’t want a steady paycheck, paid vacations and sick days, right?). Well, the office life isn’t for everyone. I have no interest in 40 for 40, and they way it’s looking these days, I don’t know how well that’ll work in the long run for ANYONE. I’m an entrepreneur at heart. It’s in my blood. I think I get it from my grandmother. This road isn’t an easy one, but it’s rewarding. So… Shout out to my fellow brave ones. I’m an In the Streets Chick: Belvedere Intense Unfiltered Party

Let’s Have a Toast to The…

I think I may have somehow forgotten to mention this, but worked on the digital outreach for Belvedere Vodka’s “A Bartender’s Dream Job” Contest and the launch of the new Intense Unfiltered variety (never did see blog posts from certain bloggers- who attended the tasting AND got comp bottles, but I know that comes with the territory). They had two launch parties for Intense Unfiltered this week in New York- one on Monday or Tues (which I was unable to attend) and another last night. (Here I am with one of my fave Belvedere folks. Our pic was on Guest of a Guest.)

Intense Unfiltered is made using food-grade grains and formulated to maintain its flavor, so it’s perfect for consumption by itself (like a scotch or cognac), but it also works well in certain cocktails. The Intense Sunrise and Intense Gimlet were served at the party, and while I actually prefer Intense Unfiltered neat, the gimlet was my favorite of the two cocktail choices. (I somehow couldn’t make any of them last long enough to take a pic, but here’s one of the sunrise.)

Intense Unfiltered is also 80 proof… that’s stronger than a lot of other vodkas, but it’s smooth enough that I think a lot of partygoers missed that point (especially a certain young lady who was clearly drunk very soon after the party started). Play on... (Playa')

I recently got a call from a fellow PR diva inviting me to see and then share my thoughts on a new Broadway play about NFL coaching legend, Vince Lombardi. Here's the catch, though, tickets were for that night (meaning I had about 8 hours to find a date... YIKES!). I accepted, went solo and had a great experience (yeah, I'm one of those girls who enjoy football... AND plays... and who doesn't mind enjoying either experience alone). The story, narrated by a young journalist-cum-author Michael McCormick (played by Keith Nobbs), took the audience on a journey from Coach Lombardi's days in New York, through his career in Green Bay, and then to his death.

Lombardi's showing at Circle in the Square, a theater with stadium style seating and a rounded stage in the middle (kinda like a football field). They made awesome use of the space, using projectors and minimal-yet-apropo props to move the story along. At one point, they projected footage of on old game onto the floor, as Coach Lombardi (played by Dan Lauria, whom you may remember as the dad from The Wonder Years) paced and yelled at his team. Although Lauria was alone on the stage, he was in the middle of the action (dope).

My inner romantic (I know, I lost G-points for that admission) got caught up in the relationship between Vince Lombardi and his wife, Marie (played by Judith Light, the mom from Who's the Boss). It was one of love, support, understanding and gentle chiding (I want a love like that! *Tony Thompson voice). The loving gazes they exchanged, the willingness to sacrifice for each other, the fighting back tears in this scene or that... all beautiful and well-acted. (I wouldn't mind having Marie's fur coats or beaded sweaters.)

My lecherous eye got a treat at Lombardi, too. Robert Christopher Riley (who played Dave Robinson) was a nice piece of eye candy (word to Lombardi *Drake Voice*). Yeah, yeah, he was a good actor, too. But I kept getting caught up in that magnetic smile and smooth stride of his.

Then there were the speeches Coach Lombardi gave his team (how many famous inspirational quotes have come from this man?). Seriously, I wanted to go take over the world right then and there... or at least tackle someone, or score a touchdown. I wondered as I watched if the guys I've worked with, like Calvin Pace, Vernon Davis and others feel that way when their coaches talk to them. (I've heard that Rex Ryan is great at motivating the guys.) Oh, and I can't forget they way he went to bat for his players, when it came to fair pay and when it came to racism. With the potential lockout looming over the NFL, I could only think about my guys and their coaches. (Let's all just hope they get what's fair... guess you can tell whose side I'm on.)

Football politics aside, I suggest going to see this play whether your a fan of sports, love, laughter or plain old good acting.

Tonight, I'm Cleanin' Out My Closet

There are 2 things everyone knows about me (well, everyone who knows me, anyway). The first is that my favorite color is fuchsia (unrelated to most other facts, but still an important one to know). The second is that I love shoes (so much that I have a blog dedicated to them- and booze). I've actually been contemplating selling off a few pairs, but haven't been able to decide on how to do it. Craigslist isn't exactly the safest option, people only want to spend pennies at most flea markets and certain auction sites are so saturated already. Plus the fees aren't worth what I'll be able to get for the shoes. Go On And Stare (See if I Care)...

People have come to know me for wild hair, it seems. At one point I wore a long weave with fuchsia streaks in the bangs. Then there was the HUGE Diana Ross-like weave. Now, I wear my natural hair, dyed to a light reddish brown and shaped in any number of ways. Some folks have combination skin, but I have combination hair. I'd say at least 5 different textures converge atop my head. That means I have both "good" and "bad" hair... plus some in between (kidding, I was raised to understand that good hair is hair well-kept). As a child, I enjoyed all the things my hair could do. During my tweens, teens and early adulthood, I struggled with breakage and scalp burning from perms. My coils, kinks, straight strands and I have reconciled, though, and I'm happy to say that once again, I love my hair! Shouts to Sesame Street for this song.

Here's another little factoid about me. In my role as a PR consultant, I work on the accounts of a few professional football players, one of whom is NY JETS linebacker, Calvin Pace (@jetsPACE97 on twitter). Yes, that means I get to attend a game or two. No, that doesn't mean I wear a signed #97 jersey (or ANY jersey) to those games. They simply don't look good on me. You can imagine my delight, then, when I got wind that Victoria's Secret PINK released a line of NFL themed gear, and the New York JETS are a featured team. Yay! As a freelancer, I often find myself perusing the pages of craigslist.org for gigs. Occasionally, there's something good. However, I often find ads by people who basically want to bend you over without even shaking your hand first (What I look like?)... and they attempt to make it seem like it'll be a good thing for YOU. Here's one that left me especially incensed:

While working with our company you will network in the fashion industry and contribute by providing your opinion about the latest trends and the latest gossip on celebrities and everything fashion! (Sounds good so far, right?)

Ready for These Jellies

Don't know about you, but I can't stand the rain (against my window). However, I'm sure we'll see quite a bit of it as weepy April approaches. That said, Spring means it's time to stock up on rubbers (pun intended, but I'm talking about shoes here). I usually prefer not to wear boots when the temperature climbs above 60 degrees, so these adorable "Darling Bow Jelly Flats" by Dirty Laundry (Available on FredFlare.com for $42) will make the perfect addition to my shoe wardrobe. The ribbon bow is probably a bit soggy when wet, but the little vents in the shoe will keep my feet from getting too funky, and there's a cushy insole for comfort. A Small World Afterall...
OK, so I don't know if you know, but I don't believe in checking luggage. I've traveled for 2 weeks with just a rollerboard and tote bag (and YES, I carried my laptop, 8 pairs of heels, 4 pairs of jeans, about 6 dresses, 2 blazers, dunno how many shirts... I think you get the point). I sometimes have a hard time finding miniatures of my fave beauty products to fit into my 1 quart zip-top plastic bag, though (and you should see the hard times some of my friends have). Yes, we could just buy empty travel bottles, but those tend to take up too much space. (I need face wash, body wash, perfume, makeup remover, moisturizer, skin oil, hair oil for the fro, toothpaste, and the list goes on.) Oh, plus I'm picky. (Cue super hero music) I just stumbled upon (and I mean that as in StumbleUpon) 3floz.com, and it's so the bomb! (Rhyme intended.) Whereas you often have to buy an entire tester kit for a certain brand, whether you want all the prodcuts or not, this site gives you the choice between kits or individual pieces. It's a little more expensive than Target or the HUGE mini section at Bed, Bath & Beyond, but if you MUST have your Dr. Hauschka toner, it's worth your while. The "Air Repair Kit" you see pictured is a little steep for me, but it sure looks interesting...

So Let's Start Giving...

A month ago, a large magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti's capital city, killing untold numbers of people and leaving Port-Au-Prince in ruins. In the direct aftermath, peole donated money, clothing and other necessary items to the best of their abilities. Telethons were held, celebrities collaborated on songs, and there seemed to be a general feeling of compassion. However, many of us have short attention spans. Once a story leaves manstream news reports, it also tends to leave the minds of the masses. Well, the fashion industry, via the CFDA's Fashion for Haiti initiative, hasn't forgotten. On February 16th, the "Fashion for Haiti" T-shirt will go on sale at stores throughout the country. Net proceeds from the sale of the $25 tees will be donated by the CFDA Foundation to the Bush Clinton Haiti Fund, which is raising funds for "immediate, high impact relief" and also continued relief over time. I'm a size small, so while you're out buying yours, feel free to get me one. Yes, I'll be buying one for myself, too, but this way I can cut one up, and still have one intact to wear with my black leggings and zebra print high heeled rain boots. (YES... I you read that right. I have them in leopard print, too.)

Birthday Specs

In case you didn't know, yours truly has a birthday approaching (very rapidly, and NO I won't tell how many candles should be on the cake). I know, now you're wondering what to get me. I Do What I Do Like I'm Doin it for TV!

I've said plenty of bad things about BET, but with the Rising Icons series (Sponsored by Grey Goose), I think they may be onto something. I recently attended the taping of the first episode, and must admit I thoroughly enjoyed myself (despite the bruise on my finger from their making us clap emphatically for long periods of time while I was wearing a HUGE ring). First up to the mic was Hal Linton. Never heard of him before but I definitely won't forget him (cop that album when it comes out.) Dude's music had that "real music" feel... you know... like something you listen to with mom, and she says "I remember when..." And he's not bad on the eyes (even gave me a "Five Heartbeats" moment with his repeated flirtations.)

Then Ms. Chrisette Michele graced the stage. Yep, after seeing her live show, I'm giving her a permanent "Mizz" because girlie's got it goin' on. (I'm also recommending that you find a way to see her ASAP!) The voice, the stage presence, the interaction with the crowd... she could have just as easily mesmerized a smoke-filled jazz club audience of yesteryear as she did us. You know how they say someone's "been here before?" Well, let's go ahead and say that about her. (Click the Pic for more images from the day... I'm even in a few) But wait, let me not forget her gown. That thang was goddess-gorgeous! (Yes I said thang... that's how great it looked on her). Oooh and the shoes (We couldn't bring in cameras, but as soon as I find a pic, I'll share!)

So, How was your Fourth of July? Mine was fantastic! I got to attend the Capitol Concert and fireworks show in DC this year (and on some VIP ish in the special seats!) It was really cool seeing Barry Manilow and Aretha Franklin (what was she wearing?!), but my highlights were Natasha Bedingfield, who had on a FIERCE pair of platforms (she may have been standing extra tall, but I'm the one who got a high from those shoes!) and the Sesame Street Muppets (I sang along to almost every song!) My seat wasn't close enough to the stage to get a clear pic, so I took one of the jumbotron.

Oh, and for the first time, I was all red, white & blue-tifully patriotic (because this year, I'm proud of the steps my country is taking... My President's Black...). How you like my outfit? Oh, and "Check My Footwork!" (You ain't got these!)... but you can if you hurry to Charlotte Russe (sometimes, you gotta give props to the cheapie spots). Anyway, it feels good to be back. Next post, I'll tell you why you NEED to make sure you take advantage of ANY opportunity you get to see Chrisette Michele perform live. Stay tuned.

Pride, a Deeper Love...

StyleScrybe's sore today. I got spent Monday night on the floor of my cousin's office, woke up at 5:30 AM Tuesday and then walked what seemed like a million blocks in heels to stand in the freezing cold for hours. It was well worth it, though because I was present at one of the most historical events in my life (and this country's history). Yes, I was there... at the Inaugural Ceremony. I stood shivering in the huddled mass of people to see Michelle Obama hold the Bible Abraham Lincoln used at his swearing in while her husband, President Barack Hussein Obama, took the Oath of Office. We received tickets to the standing area at the last minute, and I could barely see the jumbotron through the bare branches of a tree. Still, my grandchildren will be able to tell their friends I was there. My mother, who was unable to make the trip to D.C. was able to live vicariously through me.

150 years ago, I would have been human chattel, 100 years ago I would have been considered a nigger, 50 years ago I would have called myself a negro, 25 years ago, I was Black, and yesterday I was African American. Today, I am American. No, all racial context of my life has not been erased. I am the granddaughter of a Black Panther, the descendant of slaves (and slaveholders and Native Americans). The hardships and atrocities faced by my forefathers and foremothers has not been forgotten nor vindicated. There is still a HUGE racial divide. Hegemony is still VERY MUCH in effect. And, just as any orphan would, my people still have MAJOR issues. (I often say I come from an orphaned race because much our our history, etc is so obscured.) However, President Obama's presence in the Oval Office brings to mind that line from "The Jeffersons" theme song, "We've finally got our piece of the pie!" (I really could go on and on about the significance of the day, but then you'd get bored with me and not come back)

Oh! I wouldn't be StyleScrybe if I didn't take a moment to admire Mrs. Obama's Inaugural fashion choices. She was absolutely radiant at the ceremony in her yellow-green Isabel Toledo ensemble with green J.Crew gloves and patent Jimmy Choo pumps. Later, her white Jason Wu gown was a fairy tale all its own.

Life on the Fringe

Thus far, StyleScrybe's been anti- the whole fringe thing. Yeah, I know they're all the rage, but a woman with true style can always say "no" to a trend she doesn't like. One look at these "Novella" boots by Via Spiga have lead me to veto my decision, though (OK, maybe not a total veto, but I'm at least making an ammendment). They're pearlized leather, have a 4 inch heel and the shaft is tall enough for them to qualify as ef-me boots. The long fringe is simply a little hippie chic thrown into the mix (and since it's less voluminous than most of what's out there, I won't look like a Woodstock relic). Plus, next year, if fringes are out, you can tie them into a bow or find something else creative to do with them. Not bad for the $212.50 Shoes.com wants for them, right?

StyleScrybe's got the scoop on a sale you won't want to miss. (Wrote a blog about it. Like to hear it? Here it go!) I was perusing the sale rack at h&m yesterday, when I spied with my stylish eye (yeah I like that phrase so get used to it) something that I just HAD to buy. I'd been stalking this silver loose-knit sweater tank for a while, and it FINALLY had one of those red $10 tags on it! I get it to the register and the cashier asks "You don't want your somethin' free?" (Repita por favor?) I mean, I'd seen the signs, but I thought the "Buy one, get one free" was only on certain sale items. Honey... EVERYTHING in the sale section is included! I'm going for round two tomorrow. StyleScrybe's seeking a do-over of 2009's beginning for a few folks. Seems the tides of trauma lingered a little past the ball-drop for some of my family. I'm still on "if I want it, it's mine," though, so right now I'm claiming a Speedy bag from Louis Vuitton's new Stephen Sprouse Collection. Available as of January 9th, the brightly embellished collection pays tribute to, and is inspired by the work of Stephen Sprouse, the late American fashion designer and artist known for bringing downtown cool to the uptown crowd. (He also collaborated with Marc Jacobs on his first LV collection.) The collection consists of various bags, accessories and leather goods- all bearing either neon grafitti or Sprouse's signature flowers. I'm all about the Speedy 30 in flourescent Monogram Grafitti and in Monogram Roses. However, considering they current financial climate and their pricetags of $1180 and $1310, respectively, I might have to jack somebody (B*tch run that! Run that! Ante up!) to get mine. Nah, I'm a lover, not a jacker. I'll just pray for some freelance work (I got skills! Holla at me, bay-beh). Either that or you can catch me panhandling at the train station lol.

Whatchu know 'bout me (whatchu whatchu know 'bout me!)? Well here's one thing you need to know: StyleScrybe's lip gloss is officially cool (and poppin'). Since it's winter, I'm constantly re-hydrating my pucker, so I was super psyched to find a CP-time Christmas gift baggie loaded with lip goodies in my mailbox. When I saw the deep, bronzy color of the topaz Sheer Organic Shine by Kiss My Face, I was concerned, but I'm a sucker for anything minty (can't beat shiny lips AND fresh breath in one pop), so I gave it a try. Once I realized the subtlety of the color and read on the tube that it's 100% natural (and 91% organic), I was hooked. I think Opal will be my next color (they're all named after precious jewels).

Then, the sweet side of me swooned when I spotted e.l.f.'s Candy Shop lip gloss tins. I got "Cherry Bomb" and "Frosting Fanatic" and was impressed with both. Just enough shimmer and tint with believably yummy smells and a hint of flavor.

At least this year my lips will be ready for Valentine's Day even if my love life isn't. Oh... BTW, StyleScrybe is single and VERY ready to mingle. Any leads?

Oh-Eight was Great, but I'm Straight...

Less than 8 hours left in '08, and Stylescrybe is taking stock. The Giants won the Super Bowl. Barack won the election. I partied for a cause with clients in DC for Big Tiger and Vernon Davis' (SF 49ers) celeb weekends and in Baltimore for Terrell Suggs' (BAL Ravens) celeb weekend (met some FANTASTIC folks). I also cruised to Cozumel for fun on the high seas with the fam, voted in ATL and took a few other trips here and there. Oh, and a gajillion new babies in the family. Yes, some great things happened in '08. (Can't resist rhyming 8 with great, so please bear with me).

There were also some tough times, though. My family WENT THROUGH IT (from hospital visits to stolen cars, violent attacks, lost jobs and lost retirement plans), but we GOT THROUGH IT (and are still getting through it) as a family. There were also the personal romantic disappointments, friendship rifts and the constant struggle of being a freelancer in a tough economy. The last few months of this year have been rough, so I'm looking forward to the new year and the energy renewal that always seems to accompany January 1st. I've been a little down, but I'm "snatching back my happy" (thanks to big sis, super publicist, Toi Troutman for that one). World, watch out: in '09, if I want it, it's mine! That's not a resolution, it's a declaration. Who's with me? What will you do to "snatch back your happy" in this tough economy?

Gold Diggin'

StyleScrybe hasn't been gotten into the holiday spirit yet. Maybe it's the recession. I've decided to pull myself out of the funk with a little e-window shopping (read that as lusting and hoping Santa reads this blog). Said e-tail therapy is a lot easier thanks to the "salemail" I get everyday from Shopittome.com. Maybe I'll start gift guides soon (cuz last year's rocked!), but for now, it's all about me me me me me (still one of my fave Mya songs to date). I'm currently coveting Fendi's dark gold leather B. Mix tote. It's size is perfect for this time of year because as I jaunt to and from parties and events I can carry small gifts and even an umbrella on rainy days. The color's what's up too... goes with everything! So Santa, baby, put this under the tree for me... please?

On the Funky Dope Remix Tip...

StyleScrybe's doin' the woody woodpecker, the running man, and what I remember of Oaktown's 357's routine to "Yeah Yeah Yeah" (Aw Yeah!) Wanna know why? Because all those things take me back to the days when I doubled up on slouch socks and rocked lace shoe strings in my LA Gears. Back then, you were pretty wiggedy wack if you didn't have at least one pair. I had some with rhinestones on them, some others with fuschia and turquoise trim and another pair with the pink and purple twisted leather on the sides. (Couldn't tell me nothin when I put 'em on with my acid washed denim skirt and jacket... Oooh and my matching shoestring hair bow). I recently looked at pictures of myself from those days, happy they were over. Well, smiled too soon because they're back. Just like 8 ball jackets, leggings, (somewhat regrettably) acid wash and so many of the things we thought we'd never wear again, throwback LA Gears have made a return!

In a partnership with indie Cali sneaker retailer, Sportie LA, LA Gear's owner, ACI is relaunching classic styles from the Unstoppable line in updated colors and materials. (Like patent leather). The line officially launched today exclusively at Sportie LA and on its website and is slated to become available at select retailers next month. I can't lie, I might cop a pair if they do some fuschia/ turquoise joints. They start at $74.95, but that's not a horrible price considering they still come with 2 pairs of shoelaces!

To Bey or not to Bey

I recently had a convo with my aunt about Beyonce. Said aunt is "saved" and seldom listens to secular music, but she'd heard some younger members of her church discussing Mrs. Jigga and her on-stage alter ego, Sasha Fierce. "Does she really have two personalities," questioned my aunt, who then wondered if she should be concerned for homegirl's mental health. I laughingly reassured her that it's stage personas are common, and that lots of people have them. I didn't tell her, but StyleScrybe has one of her own, whom I employ at events and such. She's a lot like my normal self, except she's not shy and can have anything she wants.

The thing about Beyonce is that until recently, we, the people didn't really know her. The woman we've been getting to know since the "No No No" days was Sasha. Now, the "hottest chick in the game" is letting us into the world of the woman who can't cook and is scared to have a baby. She opened up quite a bit in the January issue of ELLE, which just hit newsstands and features Mrs. Carter on the cover. If ole girl wasn't all rich and famous, she seems like she could be part of my crew. Matter of fact, Sasha and my other self (who shall remain nameless to protect the innocent ) would probably have a great time together. (Not to mention I'd be raiding both broads' closets. Girlie gets to rock the flyest gear). So what about you, sista friends? Do is there another "you" whom you call on when needed? What's she like? When does she come out? Oh, and how many of you know the whole routine to "Single Ladies" and do it when the song comes on in the club? (While you practice that little wrist move, I'm gonna plot on copying that cover look.)

StyleScrybe's a space cadet. I went to Target last night to pick up a few things and got all the way to the register before I realized I'd left my wallet home. While I was there, though I spied with my stylish eye a couple of items I will definitely have to buy. With the holiday season crashing down upon me, I'll attending to a function or two, and this recession has made it impossible to buy outfits for each and still get my Santa on. Thank goodness Target's Limited Edition line is right on time. Some of the stuff is a little too "9-5" for me, but I fell in love with the drape tulip skirt (pictured left and only costs $24.99) and the jeweled cardigan, which is also only $24.99. (Yes, I got a little "Pointdexter" in my swag lol). They may look a little plain Jane on here, but wait till I funk them up with cool accessories and hot heels.

So, Ciara stripped for VIBE and Eva Mendez did it for Calvin Klein. Not sure who restarted this mainstream bare-all trend, and also not sure what I think of it. On one hand, a main part of my reason for picking up the glossies is the fashion (meaning I wanna see some folks wearing clothes, whether in ads or editorial spreads. No homo, but if I wanted pics of hot, nude chicks, I'd pick up Playboy, King or some other T&A mag). On the other, I have exhibitionist tendencies, so I kinda dig it, especially since there's some class involved. (It's not like they're showing va-jay-jay or anything.) ELLE Magazine's Maggie Bullock (one of my fave editors to pitch when I was a publicist) caught up with Mizz Mendez to chat about her too-hot-for-TV commercials etc, and she revealed that (like StyleScrybe) she prefers to walk around her home sans clothes. Remember school shopping? StyleScrybe does. (I mean, it was SHOPPING for crying out loud!) Not only did I require the freshest sneakers, the flyest jeans and illest accessories, I also needed cool school supplies too (I was a Lisa Frank kid). I don't miss the anxiety of new classes, homework or picking out the perfect enseble to start the school year. However, while strolling through stores on various errands and seeing notebooks, etc., I feel a bit nostalgic. I mean, there was something special about opening my notebook to a blank page and using a brand new pen. Stuff's starting to feel stagnant in StyleScrybeland, and I need that feeling of newness again (you know, that "maybe-i'll-get-straight-A's-and-maybe-the-cool-boy-will-wanna-go-steady" feeling). It's about time for me to shake things up a little and revive the "anything-can-happen" in me, even if it's only via a little office overhaul. How 'bout you? Well, here are a few items I found to get us all started:

We all need a little reminder here and there. These Love your Life Sticky Notes by KOCO New York kill two birds with one stone. Now, on tough days, you won't forget what's really important.

Not every magazine comes with those little stickers like the ones in Lucky, and you really shouldn't dog-ear book pages. Flower Petal Page Markers by Natsuko Kurosawa are a pretty way not to lose your place. Buy a few and stick them in your pencil cup for a bouquet you won't have to water.

I don't know about you, but I tend to keep an "everything" notebook handy to help organize my thoughts (and life). The cool thing about this spiral-bound Tokidoki "Kaiten Sushi" Journal (other than the dope cover) is the cute illustrations on the pages.

You can't write in your fun notebook with boring utensils. Thank goodness for these Jordi Lebland SOFT pens. They're refillable and come in a variety of "personalities". I'll be ordering Saffron. Which one's your fave?

OK, so StyleScrybe wasn't one of the blessed few to receive an advance copy of Terrance Howard's new CD, Shine Through It. However, I did see him on "The View" the other day, and I'm almost motivated to count the ways that I do love he. (C'mon you know you do too, but anyway...) I'll just stick with this one... he said one of the reasons for his entry into the music game was the fact that he came across an amazing artist and knew that the best way for her to get a deal was for him to get a deal and then share the limelight. I don't know him personally, so if you have the scoop you may have me beat. However, I'm L-O-V-I-N-G "Sanctuary", and I must agree that Ilsey Juber is "the TRUTH" (that's a direct quote from TH). Bagging Rights...

Whoever thought there'd be a day when we'd actually have to shop for shopping bags? Seriously, at one point it was simply paper or plastic. Now, there are store brand reusable bags, designer canvas totes with eco-gimmicks (that seldom hold all your groceries) and a multitude of other options. Stylescrybe's new favorite, however, is the its-las-tic bag. Made from super stretchy material, the bags can expand to twice their size and (according to the website) help your load feel a little lighter. The best part, though, is that they're manufactured in New Orleans in a factory that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and rebuilt by survivors. Happy Birthday to Me!

Yesterday was StyleScrybe's birthday. (Don't worry... I'm still accepting well wishes, gift cards and presents.) There are quite a few pluses to having a birthday in early August: you can easily do something outdoors to celebrate (lunch on the outside patio of your fave restaurant, for instance), it's a great time to take a cruise (next year!) and you can wear your sexiest skirt and most incredible sandals! The one semi-minus is the fact that it's hard to find peridot jewelry that's cute, affordable and doesn't look like your crazy aunt's costume jewelry. If you're a light green gem girl like me, this post is for you. As I was shopping for my gift to myself this year, I came across a couple of cute pieces featuring the stone that symbolizes faith. (I can't reveal all the details, but I suggest not holding your drunk homie's hand to guide her through the club because she might take you with her when she falls. So much for secrecy, huh?) In addition to the pain in my knee, there's also some sorrow in my heart; I've had to stay off my stilettos for a while, so this summer, I'm an involuntary "flattie girl." Not one for looking blending in, I'm avoiding flat gladiators. That basically means I've had to "maintain my sexy" in hot, jeweled thongs (get your mind out of the gutter... Leo and Behold

Let's pretend I won the lottery, had a visit from my fairy godparent (he or she's out there somewhere, I just know it) or found some other way into a whole lotta chedda. If said fantasy were to come true, please believe a MAJOR shopping spree would be very close to the top of my to-do list. 'Til that happens, let's play a little game of "that's my bag."

It's Independence day, and while some people still really celebrate the United States' liberation from England, I'm sure there are a bunch of folks who are happy to have a few days of freedom from the office. Then, specify how you'd like them laid out, your fave font and your color pallette. In a few minutes you have a picture that's worth... well... however many words you want.

Shopaholics, stylelaholics and even salelaholics, this is the spot for you. Once you download the plugin, the self-proclaimed personal shopping engine lets you clip items from all over the net and save them to your own personal style list. Based on your selections, the Stylefeeder.com staff suggests more. Plus, you can choose style buddies, rate items, create wish lists and give other users your opinion on what they've chosen. (Head on over and look me up... you know the name).

Blogthings.com- OK for this one you have to be reeeaaallly bored and longing for the YM days (did I just age myself there?). Sometimes it's kinda fun though. It's one of those sites with a bunch of quizes you can take and then share the results with your friends on Myspace and Facebook.

1.2.3.4.5. I'm Alive!!!

Sooo... um... er... uh... you know how sometimes you don't call a friend for a while and then feel guilty, so you don't call for an even longer while because you think said friend may be mad or something? Well, StyleScrybe has done that exact thing to all my cyber-girls (AGAIN). My bad. I hope you haven't given all the way up on me yet, though. I've been traveling quite a bit, so this go round, I'm just going to catch you up on a few things that grabbed my attention recently... then we can get back to our (semi) regularly scheduled programming.

1. Freedom Party at Canal Room in NY- If you're in the area and want to dance the ENTIRE night with a great crowd, make your way there ASAP! I normally don't like regular Friday night parties (I'm a little bougie... sue me), but this one had me doin every dance from "the butt" to the "bogle." I'm mad I missed the first 5 years of Freedom.

J Holiday- I can't lie, I semi-slept on his vocal abilities. However, a few weeks ago he sang the National Anthem beautifully at Big Tigger's Celebrity Basketball Game in DC. I got a chance to chat with him afterward, and he's a cool cat, so I'm officially an advocate.

Carol's Daughter Gelee de Soleil Browning Oil- On a recent trip to South Beach with the Cutie Crew, we laid out on the sand to score some of the Sun's smooches (yeah yeah, I know). One of my girls pulled out this beach in a bottle, and i fell in love instantly. It's got SPF 15 (again, I know), so there's a little UVA/ UVB protection, and my tan was puuuurtee after my trip.

Smirnoff Watermelon Vodka- A very good friend of mine put me up on this perfect summer libation. Throw a few ice cubes in a glass, some watermelon chunks and as much of this smooth, sweet goodness as you can handle. It sho' am good! (I tried to resist, but I couldn't... have a sense of humor... kay?)

Rimmel London 60 Second Vinyl Shine- Girls on the go still gotta get their "shine" on, and sometimes when you're stoppin' shows, there's no time to stop at the salon. This stuff got me right in one coat and one minute. My shade of choice is the fantastically fuschia "Stop Traffic."

I Wanna Take a Minute or Two to Give Much Respect Due...

You know how sometimes you read this blog and ask, "Why can't I write like that?" (Just nod and smile... make a sista feel good.) Well, I had that exact thought today while reading Cintra Wilson's "Open -Toed Fetishes" in the Critical Shopper section of the New York Times. In it, she describes a recent trek to the Louboutin outbost on Manhattan's upper east side. (She pretty much had me at "Fetish") What got me, though, was the way she described said shoe 'sperience so hilariously that i could have sworn it was an episode of some sitcom. One of my favorite parts was her telling of a fellow shopper's shoe triumph:

"Suddenly, a miracle: Lil’ Tesla, whose stature could best be described as compact and sturdy, had successfully donned a variation on the unattainable Nude. Shazam! Her legs looked instantly toned, tanned, considerably longer and gleaming as if illuminated by flashbulbs.

I suddenly understood why everyone in the shop was so miserable. I was blind; now I seethed."

Imagine my excitement when I find out about Target's newest GO International line by New York-based eco-chic designer, Rogan Gregory! Available from May 18-June 28, the entire line is made using environmentally sensitive materials. I'm talkin' cute swimsuits, chic shorts and dope dresses. (Too much alliteration?) Oh Yesterday, (ooooh) all my troubles seemed so far away... (singing like ole girl from EnVogue)

Sigh... StylesScrybe feels a little nostalgic today. It seems prom season is about to descend on my area, and I can't help but reminisce on those days back in ____ (ahem, none of your business, lol), when I frantically searched for shoes and accessories to go with my gowns. (2 proms in 5 days!) I've decided to answer my inner teen prom queen's call by perusing the prom guides. My, my how things have changed. Hemlines have gone sky high, and girls have gotten plenty adventurous. Just check Lydia Hearst's ensemble by Heatherette (cute but not quite my speed). She did a whole photo shoot for ELLEgirl, though... and there are some pretty hot Louboutin pumps on set (see!).

Earth to Everybody

What did you do to help save the planet today? I know you couldn't possibly have forgotten that it was Earth day. (It's a darn shame that we need a day on our calendars to remind us to take care of our home). This post is so late because I was out picking up litter and um planting trees (OK... you're right... StyleScrybe doesn't like dirty hands). Still, I do always recycle, walk whenever possible and buy green here and there. Plus, I'm definitely copping this "Do Something" fitted tee from the Rainforest Site. The dopest (yeah I just said dopest lol) thing about it is that if you look closely, it actually suggests some Earth-saving activities. For every one of these tees sold, 1145 square feet of rain forest will be preserved. As an added eco-bonus, for a limited (yet unspecified) time, the Rain Forest Site folks are celebrating Earth Day by planting a tree for every order completed at the Rainforest Site Shop. So, if you didn't hug a tree today or find some other way to give Mother Earth some much-needed TLC, maybe you should "Do Something" by ordering your own eco-chic tee. They also have plenty of other cute clothes, accessories and jewelry over there, so look around.

Fly Green Banana

A tipster from ELLE.com, the online home of one of my go-to glossies, just informed me that Banana Republic's Green line is a go today. Designed with Banana's already-loyal customers in mind, the 50 piece capsule collection doesn't stray far from BR's signature style (great for gals who go straight from their day jobs to their night lives). The fact that the pieces are made of organic Turkish cotton and linen, soy-silk blends and bamboo is merely a karmic bonus. As eco-icing on the cake, Banana is now using recycled packaging and energy-conserving light bulbs in stores. When you have a few minutes, Banana split from the office, and go get your Green on (look for the little green elephant emblem to make sure you're picking the right pieces). When you hear the term "Best Friend", who (or what) comes to mind? StyleScrybe immediately thinks of a chick who's been there "from the nada to the Prada", literally (her name was immortalized by a Cool & the Gang song... mad cool points if you can guess). However, for countless girls (of all ages), that term conjures images of Barbie dolls and/or diamonds. Sooo... Stylescrybe isn't the savviest when it comes to stocks, bonds and savings. With the economy in its current state, though, she figures she'd better learn sooner than later. (Seriously, how's she gonna buy shoes on Social Security?) It all just seems so confusing (not to mention borderline boring), though- bull, bear, buy here, sell there... sigh. Alas, there's hope. Psssst! Word on the street is that the style lab at Target is cookin' up that good good, and it's gonna be a collabo with Monica Botkier, designer of the supremely chic and supple handbags spotted all over Hollywood and on the pages of the hottest style mags. So far, I haven't been blown away by the affordable "such-and-such-designer for Target" accessory collections, but I still somehow get excited when I find out they're giving it another go. Entitled Botkier for Target (surprise, surprise), the limited-edition collection will be available from July 21 to September 14 at Target stores and on Target.com. No price points or images of the line yet, but I'll hook you up as soon as some come my way. In the meantime, join me in lusting over this blue Botkier beauty I saw at Bloomies.

You Gets No Love

Sigh... Your girl was a little sad today. She didn't have a Valentine. (I know, I know... Girl Power! Love Thy Self, and all that. We single gals appreciate the pep talks about self love. After a while, though, it all sounds like blah blah blah.) I definitely love me, but it'd be nice to know someone of the opposite sex shares the sentiment. Anyway, date or not (usually not), I try to get myself a V-day gift every year, but this year I couldn't think of anything that wasn't mushy or cliche. I've already bought myself diamonds and perfume and chocolate and wine. A T-shirt that expresses exactly what I feel on the sappiest of days? Haven't done that yet, but I'm gonna have to grab one from loveislame.com. As my favorite celeb publicist (and cousin) said in her Sistah-girl email today, "Cupid can kick rocks!" Ok, Ok, I'm not that bitter, but I still think this tee is pretty cool, and I look forward to what people will say when I wear it.

You know how you see the perfect shoe on a site like Shoewawa or the Shoe Blog and get excited because it goes perfectly with your "freak 'em" dress... and then you feel all let down because it's only sold on other continents, and by the time you pay the converted price you're looking at "I Wish I May" numbers? Soon that won't be the case with Nude shoes. The infinitely chic Autralian brand that manages to mix vintage and modern in the perfect proportions is headed stateside. Cold, Goin' Mad...

I don't know about you, but I've got a case of the "Can't-wait-for-spring" blues. Yeah, Yeah, it's been a relatively mild winter, but everywhere I look, there are reminders of warmer weather. Stores are bringing in spring inventory, and all the fash-rags are telling us how to transition into the next season (the really high sedity ones are reporting on resort attire for those who can afford to escape to more temperate climes... uh huh I will one day when my pockets get right). The rest of us (especially those in windowless cubicles) have to do something to shake this S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder, duh) monkey off our back, though. I say we add a little brightness to our days with pops of color, whether it's a little accessory or an article of apparel. Here are five ideas I found that should help us all get a sunnier disposition.

Just a Touch ($)

A little goes a long way with punchy pigments, so if you're on the conservative side a belt or piece of jewelry may be enough for you. Added to neutral basics, they take you from hum-drum to hotness (and often without diving too far into your pockets). Try this "opposites attract" belt ($7.00) from Lulu's Fashion Lounge (or a bright skinny belt like this Gap one) with a khaki shirtdress, or pair Urban Outfitters' pink agate charm necklace ($38.00) with a white button-up and almost any bottom.

For the Cool in Hue ($$)

Hey style sistas! I hope you had happy holidays and are planning to make a great '08. I've decided this year not to make any real resolutions other than to live my life the way I'm supposed to (yep, that means to enjoy the hell out of it and do what I can to help others enjoy too)... oh, and cop these $180 color-banded "Chelsea" pumps by Betsey Johnson. On the Low, Though, Shhh...

Last week, when my fam was here from "Tha A", they wanted to do the tourist thing in NY. Then a friend of mine came up from B-More to shop. I'm game for wearing heels to do almost anything, but with all the cracks and vents, New York streets are too treacherous for long treks in good shoes. As I got dressed, I realized the need for a fly pair of flat boots. I'm not into looking like a cookie-cutter teeny bopper (though I'm barely a day over 20, wink wink), so the 80's-inspired pointy-toed, slouchy boots don't do it for me. A pair of equestrian boots, though, is the perfect wardrobe addition for this clotheshorse. Unfortunately, riding boots (at least the cute ones) can cost a pretty penny. I gotta shout out Tia at Shake Your Beauty for her post on a party dress from Delia's, which, of course led me to a search of the site's shoe department. Gasp! These boots are only $67! Don't spill the beans, though or everybody'll be beat-biting, and we can't have that. So these will be our little secret... pinky swear?

There Once Was a Tree...

I think we all know the camp song about "the prettiest tree that you ever did see." Well, on that tree, there was a leaf, (also the prettiest that you ever did see) and it somehow fell into melted 18K gold before ending up on the end of a 30" chain. OK, that's not exactly how this beautiful piece of jewelry came to be, but it's pretty close to the truth. Barbie Never Plays Out

When i was a wee stylista, my playmate/exemplar epitomized glamor, success and almost everything a girl could want. She was plastic, though, and her world was all for fake fake. (Dunno why we used to say it that way). The dollie days have ended, but thanks to Mattel's strategic partnerships, real-life fashion figures can still channel the eternally chic icon. First, there was the limited edition makeup colabo with M.A.C, and now there's the new fashion line from Patricia Field. (You know, the mind behind Sex and the City style.) Launched November 13 at Field's Manhattan boutique, "Barbie by Patricia Field", a collection of audacious apparel and accessories is comprised of two separate lines, "Barbie Luxe by Patricia Field" (Sold exclusively at Macy's East stores) and "Junior's Barbie Wear by Patricia Field" (sold at Hot Topic). Both lines,however are available at House of Field. So far my favorites are the "I Want My Dream House tee" and the vintage-inspired belted black satin dress.
